Feng Shui 101

Misconceptions about Feng Shui

In Chinese destiny studies, there is a famous Chinese saying: 一命﹐二運﹐三鳳水, i.e. First Destiny, Second Luck and Third Feng Shui. It means that what you have in life are determined firstly by destiny, secondly by luck and thirdly by feng shui. In other words, your destiny is most important in affecting your life follow by your luck and lastly by the feng shui of your environment.

Many people have the idea that feng shui can help to improve life by changing luck. This is a misconception that many people have. In fact, feng shui cannot change luck, it can only help to enhance the favorable luck or lessens the impact of unfavorable luck in the luck cycle. If a person is in an unfavourable luck period, the effect of feng shui is minimal or small. Therefore it is a good idea to do a destiny analysis first before engaging feng shui.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is an ancient art of studying the flow of Qi. The aim is to 'harness' the good Qi in our living environment to enhance our luck. Feng Shui has been around for centuries and it is practiced on various scales by feng shui masters.

Many of us stay in an apartment. The feng shui of an apartment consists of many aspects. These aspects can be broadly grouped into 3 parts.

The first part is the feng shui of the building's external environment. It involves assessing the physical surrounding of the building, sometime for as far as a few kilometers in radius, looking at the terrain, buildings and structures, etc. with the aim to see whether the Qi flowing to the building is good or bad. This part of the work is that most difficult and is also the most important of the 3 parts. This is because if the feng shui of the surrounding is no good, the Qi flowing to the building and into the apartment will not be good.

The second part is the feng shui of the building. It involves assessing the building on several aspects with the aim to see if the building is able to 'receive' the good Qi coming from the environment and transports the good Qi to its apartments. This part of the feng shui involves looking at a building's design, shape, main entrance, corridors to apartments, etc.

The third part is the feng shui of the apartment. This part of the feng shui is the easiest of the three parts and is also the part which most feng shui masters render their feng shui service and ask cusstomers to buy feng shui objects. This part of the work involves assessing the apartment on several aspects. It involves checking the apartment on the location of its main door, kitchen, bedrooms using a feng shui tool called the Flying Star Chart. The work also involves looking out for negative feng shui features (Sha Qi) directing at the main door, windows and balcony. The work also involves looking out for negative feng shui features inside the apartment, particularly in the kitchen and bedrooms.

The work of a feng shui practitioner should covers all the 3 parts. When looking for an apartment with good feng shui, the emphasis should be in getting an area with good feng shui first, follow by a building with good feng shui and lastly a unit with good feng shui.
